How Mother’s Day Rates Against Other Holidays
How Mother’s Day Rates Against Other Holidays (According to Sales, SEO, and Strategy)
According to the National Retail Federation, Mother’s Day is the third largest retail holiday. On average, people spend over 20 million dollars every single year, and not all on candy or flowers. If we equate this per person, it would average out to over $150 each.
Mother’s Day appeals to a wide range of people (grandmas, moms, and daughters), and marketing messages tend to be more effective as a result. That said, it’s important to work smarter, not harder. Keywords are often overused (such as “Best Mother’s Day Gift”), so it’s important to be creative with your editorializing efforts – vary those keywords! Smart marketers and SEO strategists use the fact that many marketers are lazily using saturated keywords, to boost engagement levels by using niche, under-used keywords.
On average, about 30% of the population looks up retailer information for products. Most of the time, this demographic is generally younger people between the ages of 18 and 24. This means that it’s essential to use mobile to get millennial visitors. Totals associated with demographics continue to change, however. In 2015, 40% of adults aged 18-35 used their phone to research different products online.
You might think that viewers of your site love coupons, but this often isn’t the case. Statistics suggest that free shipping was the most important thing to buyers. Price cuts and coupons averaged less than 45% of total respondents, compared to 57% preferring free shipping.
85% of all adults between the ages of 18 and 44 have a smartphone and 1 in 4 buy all their gifts online. A tiny percentage of shoppers actually buy gifts a month or more before the holiday arrives (for example, in April or March).
Most people buy their gifts in the time frame between one week and 48 hours before the holiday (totaling about 50%). Americans spend most, but Canadians, French, and Europeans also spend over $40 per person.
The online marketing space is getting more and more crowded everyday. But with the right strategy in search advertising, you’ll be able to corner a portion of your market that your competition might not have tapped into yet. With the right online marketing strategy, you would be able to pull in more visits and see improved revenue.

Well, I expected Mothersday to be ranked high just because it is Mothersday. This is the day everybody can show their mom how much they love her and care for her. Although my mom is not here I still wish her a happy Mother’s day. Thanks for the information.
Surprise, surprise! Who would have known that Mother’s Day ranks at #3 for the largest retail holiday. If I had to take a guess prior to reading this post, it would have been Christmas, Valentines Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and then a tie for Mother’s day and Father’s day. The statistics for the various aspects of sales and shopping are equally as surprising as the rank. When I do my shopping, I often prefer a discount over free shipping because I tend to make large orders for a single store (both online and in-person). Usually the shipping is a flat rate for the entire order, so I personally save more with a discount. On another note, I am not surprised that Americans spend more for Mother’s day or any holiday for that matter. I have always wondered if other countries celebrate certain holidays and I was surprised that the French were amongst the top spenders amongst the countries. I have only been a mother for a year and now that I pay a little more attention to the day, I appreciated this article.
Ooh, who would have thought that Mother’s day ranks third as the largest retail holiday worldwide? I thought for sure that the New Year, Christmas, Halloween, and Valentine’s Day would dominate the top spot.
But, after much thought, it makes sense. Mothers can also mean your grandmothers or your wife. This day is when you can show your love to mothers after all, and you would buy gifts for your mother on this memorable holiday.
This event can also be an excellent strategy to increase brand awareness, especially if you sell a product that mothers would like. After all, online shopping is famous nowadays. Combine it with the mother’s day event, and you can increase brand awareness and sales too.
Mother’s day is such an important day in our household and when I am looking for gifts to give to the women in my life, I honestly am more worried about the inflation of prices of gifts and flowers and the price of shipping. I believe that offering free shipping on top of offering a discount if purchased within a specific timeframe tends to hit well with consumers. I believe that with the market being so saturated with businesses trying to get the attention of their customers, it is important to make sure that you are targetting the right people and offering the best prices.
