Social Media SEO: Facebook and Twitter Updates

Social Media SEO is one of the fastest growing fields in internet marketing. And for good reason: social media is one of the fastest growing communications mediums on the internet. Sites like Facebook and Twitter have exploded in popularity over the past few years, but companies are just now starting to realize that they can use these platforms for business purposes. Social Media SEO aims to leverage the power and scale of these platforms to help enhance brand recognition, familiarity, and, ultimately, sales.

What is Social Media SEO?

Social Media SEO is a technique that uses social media outlets — such as Facebook and Twitter — to market a brand or company. These sites are generally used for personal communications, but as they continue to grow, more and more businesses are creating accounts to help reach new customers and maintain and open dialogue with their existing user base.

What are the benefits of Social Media SEO?

There are multiple benefits of using social media platforms to advertise your brand. The first is that it adds credibility and legitimacy to your product and services — it lets customers know that there’s a “real person” working the levers of the organization. In short, it helps your company avoid the image of being a faceless corporation.

The second is that it promotes awareness of your company and its products. Social media platforms are an excellent way to reach new customers — tens of thousands of people register on these sites every day. And if one person becomes a “fan” of your company or product on Facebook, all of their friends are alerted to it. The viral nature of these sites allows you to broadcast your message without having to reach every since member individually.

The last benefit is that it keeps news from your company fresh. If your company is using Twitter every day, it’s keeping a line of communication open with its customers. This line of communication can be used to alert customers to new products, new features, or simply to keep your company’s name at the top of their minds.

What Social Media SEO services do you offer?

The Search Engine Pros offer a wide variety of Social Media SEO services in addition to their suite of natural search services and B2B services. We can keep your Facebook and Twitter accounts updated regularly, saving you the hassle of hiring a full-time employee to do it (and trust us, it is a full-time job).

About the Search Engine Pros:
The Search Engine Pros offer Social Media SEO services for companies looking to harness the power of new media platforms to reach their customers. The Search Engine Pros is a Santa Barbara-based internet marketing firm specializing in natural search SEO and Pay Per Click, SEM, and email marketing.

What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained

April 9, 2010 by The Search Engine Pro · 1 Comment

2810073214 9a0cdd18f4 t What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics and Statistics Explained

The bounce rate (BR) statistic has given webmasters unparalleled insight into the behavior of visitors to their website. It adds depth and intelligence to website analytics and offers the ability for webmasters to analytically measure the success of their landing pages and site content. But the term Bounce Rate is often misunderstood, even by the veteran webmasters and metrics analysts. What is a bounce rate? And how exactly can it be used to gather meaningful intelligence from web analytics? This article will attempt to shed some light on this very valuable statistic.

Statistical data and analytics are just figures and numbers that webmasters collect to gather information about the performance of their websites. Here we’ll precisely define BR and learn a little about the information it conveys:

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained Definition of Bounce Rate

Bounce Rate essentially gauges how interested a visitor to your site is in your content.

When your sight catches a reader’s interest, they are more likely to explore your content and browse throughout the pages on your site, decreasing your BR.

When your site does not interest a reader, they leave without browsing through many pages of content, increasing your bounce rate.

The BR statistic doesn’t necessarily capture the success or conversion rate of your website: it is simply a measurement of a user’s interest in reading the various pages of content on your site. Some sites are set up so as to convert without requiring the user to browse around; at the same time, some users don’t need to browse through a site’s content before converting. Different webmaster strategies and browsing behaviors can produce the same conversion statistics.

Using the BR to increase the success of your site will require some important decisions about how you arrange content on your website. These decisions could be superficial, but they could also necessitate fundamental changes in your site’s design, layout, and page hierarchy.

The most basic information that Bounce Rate conveys is the percentage of users who didn’t surf past their initial landing page on your website. Put another way, BR captures the percentage of users who simply “bounced” off of your website before discovering anything other than the page that they landed on. A user might leave your site for any number of reasons, and every web user has a different approach to surfing the web. To truly use your BR statistic to your advantage, you’ll have to try to put yourself in the shoes of a visitor to your website.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained The first question that most webmasters ask is, “What is a good bounce rate?”

This is often a difficult question to answer because each website serves a specific purpose. There’s no specific percentage – 10%, 80%, 78.5% — that can be considered universally “good” for a BR. The first step to understanding this statistic is understanding how the statistic is derived. Web users don’t punish webmasters by leaving their websites – they leave when they were unable to find the information or features that they were looking for. It’s as simple as that; if a user isn’t satisfied with what he or she saw when they landed at your site, then they’ll leave. The Bounce Rate basically answers the question: “How many visitors to my website were inclined to stick around?”, which is a very difficult question to interpret and is what makes it such a complicated statistic.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained Can you explain Bounce Rate in simple terms?

  • The Bounce Rate is the percentage of visitors to your site that left without browsing past the first page that they arrived at. It’s the percentage of visitors that “bounced” off of your site.
  • It is only helpful if it’s taken in the context of the purpose of your website.

438010_39 by you.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained The most important thing to understand about Bounce Rate…

  • BR has nothing to do with the subject of your website and everything to do with the strategy of your website.
  • If your site is designed to convey everything in the first page that a user lands on, then a high bounce rate is not necessarily a bad thing.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained Why do many webmasters completely ignore their Bounce Rate?

  • It is context-based, which makes interpreting it more difficult than simply determining that it’s “too high” or “too low”
  • BR is not a quantitative statistic – it doesn’t measure something concrete. Instead, it is qualitative, meaning it is subject to context and circumstance and measures the quality of something rather than the volume or size. Quantitative statistics must take into account the environment from which they came, as they’re designed to describe the quality of a certain object of study. So the quality of your BR is more important than the number itself – and this is a difficult concept for some webmasters to wrap their heads around.
  • Conversely, quantitative data is much easier to interpret – it measures something concrete. Statistics such as conversion percentage or monthly sales volume can be compared against previous time periods or other websites and deemed high or low. But because the BR statistic is contextual, it can’t be compared so easily with previous periods or other websites. Additionally, it is entirely dependent on the landing page of a user’s visit. Since the BR measures the number of users who never browsed past the initial page of their visit, then comparing the bounce rate of a landing pages with different purposes is useless.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained What should webmasters try to understand about their Bounce Rate statistics?

  • When considering if a page’s Bounce Rate is too high or too low, a webmaster should decide what the purpose of that particular page is. Should users be inclined to surf around when they reach this page? Or should this page convey information very concisely and allow the user to feel comfortable leaving the site? What is the purpose of the page?
  • New websites generally have higher Bounce Rates than more established websites. Readers familiar with a site are more inclined to browse because they are familiar with the layout of the site and the quality of the content.
  • As your CTR (click-through rate) to external pages increases, your page’s BR increases with it. But is this a bad thing? What is the purpose of that specific page?
  • Bounce Rate becomes truly revealing when traffic to a website is targeted. Untargeted traffic is unpredictable and can’t shed any light on the quality and effectiveness of a landing page.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics ExplainedHow can I improve my website with Bounce Rate?

  • You can update content and optimize pages to be more useful or compelling to visitors — especially first-time visitors who don’t yet know your site
  • You should examine the individual bounce rates of each your website’s pages. Determine which pages generate the most interest in the rest of your site – that is, which pages have the lowest BR – and try to emulate those qualities on the rest of your pages.

Some myths about Bounce Rate

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained Myth #1: Having a low bounce rate is more important than getting a lot of traffic

  • BR is definitely valuable when it generates interest in your site, but it can’t directly be compared with traffic volume.
  • Many webmasters who have recently discovered the value of the statistic look to it as the end-all, be-all indicator of a site’s success. All things considered, more traffic is always better; if the goal of your site is to generate interest through content, then a lower BR is also better. But a low BR compared with a large volume of traffic is the absolute ideal scenario!

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained Myth #2: Higher Bounce Rates mean that a site isn’t selling as many products or generating as many affiliate commissions

  • Again, a BR must be taken in the context of the purpose of the page. This statement is not necessarily true; in fact, there are many instances when a low bounce rate is actually detrimental to product sales. Imagine a user being so compelled by a website’s promotional content that they purchase an item straight from the landing page, or click the first affiliate link they see, or click the first banner ad they see. In these cases, a high BR would be a great thing! It would mean that the website’s users are immediately monetizing and not being distracted by content that doesn’t lead to a conversion. The idea is that Bounce Rate alone cannot evaluate a website’s success.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained Myth #3: Interesting content always leads to low bounce rates

  • Again, this isn’t necessarily true. The BR of a site should be taken within the context of how targeted the traffic to the site is. If a 90-year old man landed on a site selling skateboard shoes, could even the most interesting content in the world keep him from leaving?
  • Bounce rate is only revealing when traffic is targeted.
  • If hordes of users who are fundamentally not interested in the subject of your site’s content are being directed to your page, you bounce rate will almost certainly be high – regardless of the quality of your content.

2807182151 277bc0865c t What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained How can I decrease my bounce rate?

  • Make sure to put descriptive text in your website’s title tags
  • Some of the most valuable real estate on a web page is the bottom; links placed here to other content can be extremely effective. Webmasters have observed that the links placed here have a higher conversion rates than links placed anywhere else on a page, but they should be used astutely. Valuable links in this area may decrease your BR, but a well-placed ad could increase your site’s conversion numbers. Consider the pros and cons of each.
  • Advertise your website in forum signatures in online communities relevant to your site’s content
  • Use an intuitive navigation system on your site. Visitors should easily understand how to get from one page of content to the next and should easily be able to navigate your entire site. What good is great content if users can’t find it?
  • Work hard at publishing high-quality, interesting content. This one goes without saying. When users are actually interested in your site’s content, they’ll be more inclined to stick around.
  • Interactive content is great for keeping users on your site. When a user feels engaged, they are much more likely to investigate your entire site.
  • Experiment with a number of different layouts and determine which one is the easiest to use
  • Provide visitors with a number of different options to select on your site. If visitors feel that they’ve seen everything on their initial page, they’re not going to browse any further.
  • Use prominent, visible links that are easy to notice in a glance, point them to featured articles. This is like giving your site a second chance.
  • Make your links stand out so that users can find and click them easily. Emphasize and point them in the direction of featured content.
  • Try to put yourself in the shoes of your visitors and anticipate how they’ll use your site. Build your site layout from the visitor’s point of view, not your own.
  • Organize your content in a way that visitors will quickly recognize. Don’t hide content!
  • Entice users to click on links by using compelling phrases in your link text. Explain to your users why they should click through to more content!
  • Make the purpose and subject of your website very obvious. Users won’t stay on a site that they don’t understand.

2810516002 4fc622963a o What is a Bounce Rate? Website Analytics Explained How can I increase my Bounce Rate?

  • First-time visitors to a website are not inclined to spend much time there.
  • Aggregation sites like Reddit and Digg are notorious for only spending a few seconds on a website before moving on. Attract these users to increase your BR.
  • Using deceptive keywords, meta description tags, title tags, or introductory content is a surefire way to increase your bounce rate.
  • RSS subscribers generally only visit your site’s most recent content since they’ve seen everything else before. This is another case of a high BR not being a bad thing – RSS subscribers are the most loyal readers a site can have!
  • Paraphrasing or rewording someone else’s content and then linking to the original article will only encourage readers to read the original. Why read someone else’s summary when the original is accessible right now?
  • Putting analytics code in an iFrame on a website will increase bounce rate.
  • Making your website a visitor’s homepage or startpage will almost surely increase bounce rate – although not universally. Many homepage websites have bounce rates of between 30 and 60%.

URL Shorteners: Top 7 Advantages

April 3, 2010 by The Search Engine Pro · Leave a Comment

One segment of web-based tools that seems to be expanding by the minute is URL shorteners. These are sites like tinyurl.com that allow users to redirect their long, cryptic web address to one which is much easier to remember. It’s obvious that these tools have the potential to make a lot of money: controlling a link is the same as controlling web traffic. And there are a number of ways in which URL shorteners can use the links it creates.

There are several advantages to the end-user of a URL shortening service:

  • The most obvious is that the web address is, well, shorter. A long web address is not only hard to remember, it’s difficult to use in many other web-based services such as a Facebook Status Update or a Twitter tweet. Short web addresses conserve valuable character space in these services.
  • Many URL shorteners keep detailed traffic statistics about the web address, which means the owner of the shortened web address can see not only how much traffic visited the web address but also where the traffic came from.
  • A shortened web address hides the “real web address” or the destination page. This is great when your original web address is long and hard on the eyes. But it can also help some unscrupulous page owners by hiding the identity of the page behind the shortened web address, which sometimes might be a page that many users wouldn’t want to visit.
  • Some URL shorteners allow users to choose a custom web address. The advantage of having a memorable web address is that a web surfer doesn’t have to search for it; it’s also re-usable, meaning that the web address can be re-directed to new content. One example is http://tinyurl.com/mypictures, which might point to an online album with an almost indecipherable web address.
  • The best URL shorteners will use a 301 redirect to pass along their Google page rank to the destination web address. This helps the redirected web address advance in search rankings.
  • Many web services utilize their own forwarding scripts that allow the link to be loaded into a frame, leaving the original page from which the link was clicked intact – Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn all do this. This allows a user on this site to link to relevant information without the reader leaving their profile page.
  • Some URL shorteners give their users access to their link database through an API. These links can provide users with limitless analytics potential to mine data and traffic information. Imagine if TinyURL could be merged with a Reddit or Digg.

But as with anything else, URL shorteners come with their own set of disadvantages:

  • As noted above, unscrupulous users can hide potentially offensive or malicious destination pages with a shortened web address. Some URL shorteners have begun to display the destination web address alongside the shortened web address, and this practice will likely become more prevalent.
  • Creating URL shorteners is relatively easy, but many attract so much traffic that their web hosting bills skyrocket and their services go out of business. When URL shorteners shut down, so do all of the links that anyone ever created with their services.
  • Shortened web addresses generally don’t convey any information about the content on the destination page and therefore offer no incentives to click on the link. A shortened web address in Twitter won’t contain any link text, and the reader is forced to gather context about the link from the text of the update.
  • Many URL shorteners don’t have robust user account features – they simply allow anonymous users to redirect web addresses. While this might save time, it also prevents frequent users from being able to use a dashboard to organize their shortened web addresses and to keep track of which web addresses they’ve shortened.
  • Shortened web addresses generally have no link text and therefore do not associate themselves organically with a keyword. Readers have to either gather context from the surrounding content or take a chance with the link.

Many webmasters don’t spend much time optimizing their websites for natural search — and for webmasters running shopping carts and who derive a major portion of their revenue from the internet, that can be a dangerous mistake. Optimizing an ecommerce site for organic search ensures that new customers will find your products all the time, expanding your revenue base and providing consistency and dependability. This is the path to take to increase internet sales.

The truth is that no webmaster can afford to ignore the benefits of natural search. The majority of shoppers begin their online hunt for a good or product with a search engine — and if you’re not in the competition for their internet searches, you’re not in the competition for their purchases. Optimizing your online shopping cart for natural search is one of the most effective and most immediate ways you can begin to increase internet sales.

SEO Plans

Many webmasters are overwhelmed by the concept of search engine optimization, but they shouldn’t be. While it can be complicated at times, it is also the foundation of any successful internet marketing strategy. Search engine optimization is perhaps the most effective way a webmaster can increase web site traffic to increase internet sales. By employing the techniques discussed in our weekly webinar, a webmaster will learn how to increase web site traffic by harnessing the power of natural search. Optimizing a website for natural search is quite possibly the single most important thing any website owner should be doing to increase web site traffic. Search engines generate an enormous amount of traffic, and their influence on the internet is only set to grow as people become ever accustomed to beginning their web surfing experience at a search engine.

The traditional fields of marketing will always play a role in a business’ strategy, but internet marketing is probably the only field which is constantly growing in importance, influence, and potential for revenue generation. To increase web site traffic, a webmaster should be ready to adapt to the changing internet landscape and optimize his or her site for natural search. Fields like social media SEO prove the importance of understanding how search engine optimization words: social media was an unknown concept five years ago, but now every webmaster is battling for valuable social media credibility. To increase web site traffic, a webmaster must understand, at the very least, the basic fundamentals of search engine marketing.

Increase Web Site Traffic: The 7 Best Traffic Tips

February 18, 2010 by The Search Engine Pro · Leave a Comment

Today our discussion will center around 7 Inbound Linking strategies that will help you increase web site traffic.  We will discuss why they’re important for Google Rankings and how to get them efficiently.

First, let’s clarify what we mean when we say a link.

A link is essentially when you get a your web site url, on a web site other than your own (someone else’s web site).   Another way of defining a link is by thinking of it terms of a “vote” for your web site.  Some votes are obviously carry more weight in Google’s eyes.  Hence, it makes sense to get links from Authority Sites in your niche.  For example if you are a psychologist, and you manage to get a link on www.psychologytoday.com  That is going to be much more powerful for you than a link from your 10 year old son’s godaddy website.

Now there’s some additional complexities here that I won’t go into tonight, particularly with regards to Page Rank.  During this webinar – we will focus primarily on learning how to identify the different kinds of links, and how to more easily obtain links to increase web site traffic.  For now just repeat the following mantra–More Quality Links = More Ranks = More Traffic.

So what are the different types on links?

1.)  Reciprocal Links

If we put a link to your website on this page today, you would have a new reciprocal link.  Reciprocal links can be very helpful to increase web site traffic both from humans and search engines.  Exchange reciprocal links with websites applicable to your industry.

2. ) Directory Links

In the ocean of information, the internet, there are many locations where you can post a link pointing back to your web site. There are literally 1000′s of directories that will accept your link. In most cases, site marketers boycott such ‘secondary directories’ thinking that little or no traffic would result from being listed on them…We agree! Directories are not likely to bring huge volumes of traffic. However, inclusion in these directories creates a powerful one-way-link factor. In other words, submitting your site to 100′s of ‘seemingly insignificant directories will indeed reinforce your link popularity factor. That said, submissions should be addressed to directories featuring a decent PR. That’s what we call working smarter not harder. Please note : Only manual submissions work for directory submission – watch out for folks offering to submit your site to thousands of directories since they usually perform the work with software which are not SEO friendly – submitting to a directory requires individual registration in all cases and it is a labor intensive process which can only be fulfilled by hand. Directory submission is a great way to increase web site traffic.

3.) Article Marketing Links

Top internet marketer’s all speak very highly of article marketing. Submitting your articles to article directories (places that aggregate content) is a great link strategy. Thousands of eZine publishers are on the lookout for new articles and press release material on a continuing basis. People look to article directories to get content for their site. The caveat is that they must keep your author link intact, which provides you with an inbound link to your site. Using an article writing service is an excellent way of spreading information about your site, and thus an excellent way to increase web site traffic.

4.) Blogs Links

Some internet marketers argue that the best links you can get, are ‘contextual links’. Contextual refers to relevancy and context. The idea is that Google ranks sites based on relevancy. If your inbound links are on relevant pages to your topic, Google likes this. If you have spam links across hundreds of non-relevant web pages, Google is likely to see this as a manipulation tactic. Where possible, participate in blogs and forums that are related to your industry. Post comments & questions and always include your URL listed in your signature. The name of the game is to have interaction with online communities through blogs and forums to have a legitimate reason to list your URL as many times as possible, thus skyrocketing your link popularity through one-way-links. Link enhancement through Blogs & Forums is also a labor intense process which cannot be implemented thru software. To post a comment, a human must read the blog, and make an insightful, helpful response. There is an art to’navigate’ through blogs & forums, but it is definitely worth the time invested since Google loves contextual one-way-links!

5.) Social Media links

If you haven’t heard the term Social Media lately, you might be living in a cave. Wikipedia defines it as follows: “Social media supports the human need for social interaction with technology, transforming broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers.” Think social media when you think of sites like facebook, linkedin, myspace, twitter, etc, these are places where people are interacting online. Links are often generated from social media activities, although it is primarily used best as a branding or networking medium.  Everytime I turn around, I am hearing facebook, facebook, facebook.  Alright guys, you know what that means, it’s time to get on facebook.  Remember to use a fan page with facebook if you want to get some SEO benefit out of the posts you are making. Social Media SEO is one of the newest and fastest growing ways to increase web site traffic.

6.) Press Release links

Successful link strategies also include monthly online press releases. Press releases are great as well because newsrooms love to proliferate good content around the internet. In most cases, you shouldn’t expect to get mega traffic from such articles after they get published.  Press Releases are an easy and efficient way to extend backlinks to your site.  In general, press release sites tend to accept only current event articles so be mindful of this before you spend a whole bunch of time writing your press release if you want to maximize the chances of it being accepted into some of the online news houses.

7.) Forum links

Forums are great places to get one way links as well.  Forum links, similar to blog commenting links are very good types of links to get because they are highly contextual, meaning, they have a whole bunch of relevant text around the link, which is what the Google spider is generally looking for when it crawls the web. Forum links are an excellent means to increase web site traffic. Want to save a ton of time building links? Use our Link Robot

Keyword Research: 7 Ways To Increase Web Site Traffic

February 4, 2010 by The Search Engine Pro · Leave a Comment

7 Ways to Increase Web Site Traffic Utilizing Keyword Research

  1. Define your target topic or interest. Keywords are the words that web surfers enter in search engines to find websites. It’s pointless to optimize your web pages for phrases that nobody uses in the search engines. For a successful online marketing campaign, you must target the right keywords. The words you use should be relevant for your website and web surfers should be searching for your keywords. If you target the wrong phrases, your website promotion efforts will be in vain and you will waste a lot of time and money. Defining a target topic is the easiest step to increase web site traffic through keyword research.
  2. Different Types Of Keywords. There are three different keyword types: keywords for browsing, keywords for comparing and keywords for buying. Keywords for comparing are usually the phrases that work best for search engine optimization. People who use that type are looking for a solution to their problem and they are ready to buy. To get best results with your search engine optimization efforts, you should concentrate on that type. Need help researching keywords? We have state of the art software that will find the best keywords for your industry. This is the all important first step in an SEO campaign. Get this step wrong, and your SEO efforts will be in vain. Click Here. Keyword Research Package. The three keyword types are outlined below:

    Browsing

During the first phase of research, web surfers typically use general keywords to find information. For example, a web surfer might be interested in an ipod. The keyword that the web surfer might use in search engines could be: ipod or nano. People who use keywords for browsing are usually looking for information only. Keywords for browsing usually have a very high search volume. Getting a top 10 ranking for these general keywords is very difficult and nearly impossible. It is unlikely that a web surfer who uses such a generic keyword will buy something. For example if someone types in “music” or “apple”. Focusing on customers that are browsing is generally the best means to increase web site traffic, although conversion rates will typically be lower.

    Comparing

In the second research phase, web surfers narrow their selection because they now know what type of product they want. For example, the web surfer might have found out the he is interested in an “ipod nano 8gb”. People who use keywords for comparing are more ready to buy. These are probably the best keywords that you can target for your search engine optimization campaign. They will have much lower search volume than general keywords but they will lead to more sales and it is much easier to get top 10 rankings for these phrases. They will likewise not increase web site traffic by a considerable amount, however.

    Buying

During the last research phase, web surfers know what they want to purchase. They are just looking for the website with the best offer. For that reason, these surfers use very specific keywords: “ipod nano 8gb free shipping”. People who use these phases for buying are ready to buy. However, these keywords won’t help the website owner’s SEO campaign if they offer competing products, and they tend to get top positions naturally as a result of quality onsite SEO targeted at “comparative keywords”. The majority of web surfers use a two to four word phrase in a search, so phrases are generally more effective. Single words cannot be promoted effectively because they are not very targeted. Internet users who use four-word searches are more likely to purchase goods or services than those using fewer words (source: Oneupweb Research).

  3. Use “how” to help define problems in your topic area. When people search online, many times they’re seeking answers to their problems, and they seek answers to these problems by asking “how” questions. Common questions might be things like how to do one of the following: start, grow, train employees, find employees, market, advertise, price services, bill customers, bid for contracts, buy, insure, find supplies, and write a business plan. Answering how questions through keyword research can help increase web site traffic.
  4. Use “action terms”. Note the action terms that were used found in this example — starting, buying, growing, marketing, training, advertising, billing, bidding, etc. These are terms that people use to help them solve the problems. Create a list for each of these terms and brainstorm synonyms for these terms, as well. If you target the wrong phrases, you will lose time and money. You will invest a lot of time in optimizing your web pages for phrases for which your website cannot get high rankings at the moment. Or you will invest a lot of time in optimizing your web pages for phrases that don’t convert to sales. It is very important that you choose the right keywords that lead to high search engine rankings and sales. Make sure that you choose the correct keyword type.
  5. Group and research. Focused on similar groups of phrases. This is likely to bring you larger volumes of targeted visitors. For example, wedding photography, photographer for wedding, wedding photographer professional, etc.
  6. Count the searches. One word phrases, while very highly searched, are usually a lost cause and are not very effective because they are not very targeted. In addition, the competition for these phrases is very high and it is very difficult to get good rankings for them. Internet users who use four-word searches are more likely to purchase goods or services than those using fewer words (source: Oneupweb Research). For keyword research to help you increase web site traffic, you must understand what exactly your potential new visitors are searching for.
  7. Use the keywords in your blog posts. With this research you can write articles on these topics, create SEO blog posts about these topics, upload web pages on these topics, update the meta tags on your web pages, make videos on podcasts about these topics, create information products, write pay-per-click campaigns, and design classified ads, to name just a few of the uses for this research.

7 Ways To Increase Web Site Traffic

7 Ways To Increase Web Site Traffic

1. Provide quality content, products, or services
2. Use an RSS feed
3. Run contests
4. Make it easy for visitors to refer others
5. Write articles for ezines and article publishers
6. Write press releases
7. Employee Evangelism

1. The higher the quality of material you produce, the more often your site will be linked to.

Each link to your site is an avenue for new visitors to your business.
If you do not think you have the ability to create something that will touch
people like it needs to, you may have to spend the money and hire someone else
to do it for you. Fortunately for you, there are a lot of service that will put you in
touch with freelance writers, site designers, and program designers. If you have
an idea about what you want, chances are there is someone available to do it for
you. If you are willing to take a chance on a freelancer who has not yet
established themselves, you can often find one that will work for a low wage in
exchange for the experience the job will give them. Be careful though; often
times you get what you pay for. Make sure the work you get is up to the
standards necessary to appeal to your audience. Having the highest quality
content is the easiest means to increase web site traffic.

2. Use an RSS feed

Another way to build returning traffic to your site is to provide an RSS feed. In
its current form, RSS stand for “Really Simple Syndication”. RSS allows someone
to place a link on their homepage, website, or RSS reader that sends an update
every time you update the information on your site.

This is especially popular with news sites and blogs. If you are posting to your
blog every week day, your readers will get an update 5 times a week. That
means 5 times a week they will be reminded of your name and your website.
This can really work to your advantage because they are getting that reminder
because they asked to be reminded, not because you are forcing yourself on
them. Every day they have a chance to read your message, and have the opportunity
to visit the main part of your site. The more traffic that comes to your site on a
regular basis, the more sales and advertising revenue you can generate.

Another way to use RSS feeds is to bring news or information about your niche
that will add value to your site. By putting fresh, up to date information on your
websites main page, you give visitors a reason to come back to your site on a
continuing basis. If they are interested in your topic, the will return to your site
to get updates.

Both uses of RSS are designed to keep your customers coming back. The more
often they come back and get new, useful, or entertaining material, the more
likely they are of spreading the word to their friends and family, and that is the
first step of going viral. Viral content is a fairly new SEO strategy that has been
proven very effective for webmasters trying to increase web site traffic.

3. Run Contests

People love to win things, and they love to be recognized for winning. Be
creative in deciding what the prize should be, but consider how much your
customers will think it is worth. While prize doesn’t have to be something of
great value, it does have to be something that is useful or of some value to the
winner. Make sure that it is something they want, not just a blatant
advertisement for your business — that can actually undermine your attempt
to increase web site traffic. A bumper sticker marketing your web address
is not going to generate a great deal of interest. Your advertisement or web
address should be plainly visible, but it should not be the focal point of the item
you are giving away.

If you are running a business to business website, free advertising on your site
for the winner is something that wouldn’t cost you anything, but if your site
doesn’t attract very much traffic the prize may not be seen as being very
valuable.

4. Make it easy for visitors to refer others

Have you noticed the number of websites that include a button that lets you tell
others about the site you are visiting? They are becoming more popular,
because site owners have learned that if you want your visitors to do something
for you, you have to make it as easy as possible. If you want viewers if your site
to tell others, it does not get much simpler than giving them a button to click.
The nice thing is, if you design and set up your own site, it is quick and easy to
add the button. The hardest part is deciding where you want the button located.
If you do not do any site design, it is a small cost to have a designer do it for
you.

The button runs a small bit of code called a “tell-a-friend” script. When your
viewer clicks the button it opens up a small window that allows them to enter
their friends email address and a short message so they can tell others about
your site. A referral link is a powerful tool to increase web site traffic
because it comes verified from a person’s friend or family member, not
a random member of the public.

The power of this script goes back to what I discussed back at the beginning;
people will listen to what their friends and family say. There is a level
of trust there that you can not come close to, at least not initially. That kind of
trust is built over time. Building that trust is an incredible internet marketing
strategy
.

Does a tell-a-friend button flood your site with traffic? Maybe not, but it will
bring new traffic, and the traffic that comes is more likely to come back. It may
not be the best means to increase web site traffic by absolute numbers, but it brings
quality traffic, which is perhaps more important.

Make it easy for readers to email the page to a friend
Allowing your readers to send a link to your site through email is another way to
encourage your visitors to tell their friends and family about your site. It is very
similar to the tell-a-friend button in the way it works.

If someone likes your site, they have an option to click on a button that will open
a window in their email program. The script the button activates will insert your
web address in the message window of the email. They can then fill out the rest
of the message and send your link to as many friends and family members as
they like.

5. Write articles for ezines and article publishers

I mentioned earlier that people are more likely to listen to someone that they
consider to be an expert. Why can’t that expert be you? If you know enough
about a topic to build a business around it, you are an expert. All it takes is a
little marketing to convince others that you are an expert. Article marketing
is an incredible way to increase web site traffic.

One method of establishing yourself as an expert and gaining some exposure for
yourself and your business is to write articles for ezines and article publishers.
You write an article relating to your business, and then post it to one of the
online publishing services. When people read your article, they see your name,
and assume you know what you are talking about. The more different places
you can get your name and the name of your business, the better that chances
are that people will begin to remember you. Over time with multiple exposures
you begin to build brand recognition.

There are two different ways online article publishers let you get your name out.
Some sites, like ezinearticles.com, let you put a short 1-2 sentence “About the
Author” section at the end of your article. You get the opportunity to put
together a brief statement about yourself and your business, and a link back to
your site.

Sites like Associated Content and Helium will have a content producer’s page that
will allow you the room to write quite a bit more. You can talk about yourself,
your business, and why the reader should believe what you say. You can also
include multiple links that will lead the reader into your site.

When readers click on the link to come to your site they are what marketers
refer to as “pre-qualified”. They chose to be there based on the information they
read. They were not tricked into visiting your site, and they were not pressured
to go there by spam emails. They are there by choice, and that makes them
more receptive to your message, and increases the probability that they will
purchase your products or services.

Beside the traffic that comes to your site directly from your article, if the article is
really good it may end up on one of the social bookmark sites like Digg, Stumble
Upon, or del.ico.us. If your article gets ranked in one of these sites, it can
increase web site traffic in a very short period of time. That burst of visitors
might last for only a day or two, but it could also linger in the top rankings for
days or weeks.

Another side benefit of writing articles is that they can provide a small amount of
residual income to you. Many of these sites offer revenue sharing that will give
you a small portion of the advertising that the article generates. The amount
you get per article usually is not very much, but enough articles over time can
add up.

6. Write Press Releases

Like many websites, newspapers need content. A lot of newspapers, especially
smaller local newspapers, have a hard time coming up with enough fresh content
to fill all of the space they have. With limited budgets, they do not have the staff
needed to come up with fresh material every day. This creates a great
opportunity for you. Press releases should be a key component of every
webmaster’s SEO campaign strategy.

While papers are not just going to give you free advertising, they will allow you
to write an article about something that your businesses is doing, especially if it
involves a service or a community event. The newspapers understand that they
are allowing you to advertise in exchange for the free content, but it can not be
blatant advertising.

All you have to do is write the article, making sure you mention your businesses
name, and list your web address so they can get more information. You just
have to make sure the piece is well written, and that your business is doing
something worth telling people about. Press release SEO really is one of the
best ways to increase web site traffic.

Not only does this get the name of your business out to the community, but it
also helps enhance your reputation. Even without knowing you, people will
make a judgment on whether they like you, and can trust you. By building a
positive reputation as someone who is active in the community, it makes it easier
for them to like you, and by extension, your business.

7. Employee evangelism

The best advocates you have for your business are already on your payroll. Your
employees already have a vested interest in getting the word out about your
company. If you succeed, they get to keep their jobs, but if you fail, they may
find themselves unemployed.

Your employees know your business like no one else does. They can discuss the
ins and outs of your business, and tell others why your product or service is
superior to the competition. Enthusiastic employees will spread the word to
family, friends, and colleagues about your company, and you do not even have
to pay them anything extra to do it. It is part of their normal conversation with
people. Employee evangelism is a powerful form of marketing that, indirectly, can
help you increase web site traffic.

Back in the early days of the computer industry, IBM ruled the world of
technology. A lot of computer companies were trying to get their legs under
them, but IBM was the king. One of the reasons IBM was able to continually
withstand the ever increasing competition was that they understood the power
their employees had to market the company. They had a ready made marketing
team made up of engineers, secretaries, accountants, and programmers. By
harnessing that power they were able to build a stellar reputation in the
computer industry.

From the day they were first hired, IBM employees were taught how to be
advocates for the company. They were trained in the company’s values, and
were shown the quality of the products they were helping to build. They bought
into IBM’s corporate culture, and they, in turn, shared what they knew with
anyone who would listen. The technology world heard the message so often,
and from so many different people, that they never questioned the fact that IBM
was the best.

The key to success is your ability to assemble a loyal dedicated workforce. If
you can do that, then you have the potential to tap into some of that power as
well. Turn your employees into a marketing team and let them spread the word
about how great your company is. If they truly believe it, their enthusiasm will
become infectious. People will believe what your employees say, because it is
obvious that your employees believe it themselves.

Take a good, objective look at your website. Once the traffic comes, what will
they do when they get there? You have to make sure your design is right, your
website is easy to navigate through, all of the links are working, and your
message will convince people to do what you want them to do.
A final reminder; any one of these methods are not meant to be used as the only
marketing you are doing. They should be used as a part of a larger internet marketing
campaign
. Everything you do to spread the word about your site can bring you
traffic. Only a few of them will ever go viral, but each of them has the potential
to send traffic to your site, even without going viral. Do not waste opportunities
waiting for something to happen. Continue working on building traffic to your
site, and being ready when the traffic arrives. It’s not enough to work hard
to increase web site traffic; once the visitors are at hand, a webmaster has to
be ready to make the most of their presence.

Be prepared. When one of your marketing techniques does go viral, hang on for
a wild ride. It will all be worth your efforts.

Noozhawk Pioneers Exemplary Model For Local News Online

January 26, 2010 by The Search Engine Pro · Leave a Comment

Noozhawk is pioneering an exemplary model for local news online.

Awhile back I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of Noozhawk, Bill MacFadyen. I can tell when some people have a genuinely good attitude towards life and people, that’s the vibe I got from Bill. Check out his web site at www.noozhawk.com I really enjoy reading the local news at his web site. Very interesting and engaging material.

Here’s some background on Noozhawk:

Founded in late 2007, the online-only Noozhawk.com is covering the community in two unique ways: With professional journalists providing original reporting on complex issues and topics of the day, and by inviting community members to share their own stories on the everyday activities with which they’re involved.

Thanks to the timely and widely publicized implosion of Santa Barbara’s venerable daily newspaper, we’re trying to take advantage of the opportunity to disrupt the marketplace against fossil media and a sea of aggregators and bloggers who can’t provide enough consistent or reliable context for things like government, school board, politics, crime and natural disasters.

Noozhawk is self-funded and advertising-supported and we’re trying not to be too sophisticated for the marketplace, understanding that in a small town all built around relationships, you don’t need to be. What I want to do is figure out the exact formula needed for it to work: what the true demographic is, how few reporters you can get away with and what they must cover to convey authenticity, how many sales people you need, and how you handle all the other stuff a daily newspaper should provide — and then grow this model regionally or take it to other small- to midsized communities with lazy daily newspapers.
