7 Ways To Increase Web Site Traffic Webinar 2-17-2010

Posted by Taylor-Reaume in social site links , Social Media links , Reciprocal links , Press Release links , page rank , outbound links , link strategy , link power , link popularity , Link Building , inbound links , Forum links , Directory Links , Blogs Links , Article Marketing Links

Taylor-Reaume

Today our discussion will center around 7 Inbound Linking strategies that will help you drive more traffic to your site.  We will discuss why they're important for Google Rankings and how to get them efficiently.
First, let's clarify what we mean when we say a link.

A link is essentially when you get a your web site url, on a web site other than your own (someone elses web site).   Another way of defining a link is by thinking of it terms of a "vote" for your web site.  Some votes are obviously carry more weight in Google's eyes.  Hence, it makes sense to get links from Authority Sites in your niche.  For example if you are a psychologist, and you manage to get a link on www.psychologytoday.com  That is going to be much more powerful for you than a link from your 10 year old son's godaddy website.

Now there's some additional complexities here that I won't go into tonight, particularly with regards to Page Rank.  During this webinar - we will focus primarily on learning how to identify the different kinds of links, and how to more easily obtain them.  For now just repeat the following mantra--More Quality Links = More Ranks = More Traffic.

So what are the different types on links?

1.)  Reciprocal Links

If we put a link to your website on this page today, you would have a new reciprocal link.  Reciprocal links can be very helpful in driving both human traffic and search engine traffic to your web site.  Exchange reciprocal links with websites applicable to your industry.

2. ) Directory Links

In the ocean of information, the internet, there are many locations where you can post a link pointing back to your web site. There are litrerally 1000's of directories that will accept your link. In most cases, site marketers boycott such 'secondary directories' thinking that little or no traffic would result from being listed on them...We agree! Directories are not likely to bring huge volumes of traffic. However, inclusion in these directories creates a powerful one-way-link factor. In other words, submitting your site to 100's of'seemingly insignificant directories will indeed reinforce your link popularity factor. That said, submissions should be addressed to directories featuring a decent PR. That's what we call working smarter not harder. Please note : Only manual submissions work for directory submission - watch out for folks offering to submit your site to thousands of directories since they usually perform the work with softwares which are not SEO friendly - submitting to a directory requires individual registration in all cases and it is a labor intensive process which can only be fulfilled by hand.

3.) Article Marketing Links

Top internet marketer's all speak very highly of article marketing. Submitting your articles to article directories (places that aggregate content) is a great link strategy. Thousands of eZine publishers are on the lookout for new articles and press release material on a continuing basis. People look to article directories to get content for their site. The caveat is that they must keep your author link intact, which provides you with an inbound link to your site.

4.) Blogs Links

Some internet marketers argue that the best links you can get, are 'contextual links'. Contextual refers to relevancy and context. The idea is that Google ranks sites based on relevancy. If your inbound links are on relevant pages to your topic, Google likes this. If you have spam links across hundreds of non-relevant web pages, Google is likely to see this as a manipulation tactic. Where possible, participate in blogs and forums that are related to your industry. Post comments & questions and always include your URL listed in your signature. The name of the game is to have interaction with online communities through blogs and forums to have a legitimate reason to list your URL as many times as possible, thus skyrocketing your link popularity through one-way-links. Link enhancement thru Blogs & Forums is also a labor intense process which cannot be implemented thru software. To post a comment, a human must read the blog, and make an insightful, helpful response. There is an art to'navigate' through blogs & forums, but it is definitely worth the time invested since Google loves contextual one-way-links!

5.) Social Media links

If you haven't heard the term Social Media lately, you might be living in a cave. Wikipedia defines it as follows: "Social media supports the human need for social interaction with technology, transforming broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers." Think social media when you think of sites like facebook, linkedin, myspace, twitter, etc, these are places where people are interacting online. Links are often generated from social media activities, although it is primarily used best as a branding or networking medium.  Everytime I turn around, I am hearing facebook, facebook, facebook.  Alright guys, you know what that means, it's time to get on facebook.  Remember to use a fan page with facebook if you want to get some SEO benefit out of the posts you are making.

6.) Press Release links

Successful link strategies also include monthly online press releases. Press releases are great as well because newsrooms love to proliferate good content around the internet. In most cases, you shouldn't expect to get mega traffic from such articles after they get published.  Press Releases are an easy and efficient way to extend backlinks to your site.  In general, press release sites tend to accept only current event articles so be mindful of this before you spend a whole bunch of time writing your press release if you want to maximize the chances of it being accepted into some of the online news houses.

7.) Forum links

Forums are great places to get one way links as well.  Forum links, similar to blog commenting links are very good types of links to get because they are highly contextual, meaning, they have a whole bunch of relevant text around the link, which is what the Google spider is generally looking for when it crawls the web.  Want to save a ton of time building links? 7 Ways To Increase Web Site Traffic Webinar February 3rd 2010

7 Traffic Tips For Keyword Research

  1. Define your target topic or interest. Keywords are the words that web surfers enter in search engines to find websites. It's pointless to optimize your web pages for keywords that nobody uses in the search engines. For a successful online marketing campaign, you must target the right keywords. The keywords you use should be relevant for your website and web surfers should be searching for your keywords. If you target the wrong keywords, your website promotion efforts will be in vain and you will waste a lot of time and money.

  2. Different Types Of Keywords. There are three different keyword types: keywords for browsing, keywords for comparing and keywords for buying. Keywords for comparing are usually the keywords that work best for search engine optimization. People who use that keyword type are looking for a solution to their problem and they are ready to buy. To get best results with your search engine optimization efforts, you should concentrate on that keyword type. Need help researching keywords? We have state of the art software that will find the best keywords for your industry. This is the all important first step in an SEO campaign. Get this step wrong, and your seo efforts will be in vain. Click Here. Keyword Research Package.

    Keywords for browsing

During the first phase of research, web surfers typically use general keywords to find information. For example, a web surfer might be interested in an ipod. The keyword that the web surfer might use in search engines could be: ipod or nano. People who use keywords for browsing are usually looking for information only. Keywords for browsing usually have a very high search volume. Getting a top 10 ranking for these general keywords is very difficult and nearly impossible. It is unlikely that a web surfer who uses such a generic keyword will buy something. For example if someone types in "music" or "apple".

    Keywords for comparing

In the second research phase, web surfers narrow their selection because they now know what type of product they want. For example, the web surfer might have found out the he is interested in an "ipod nano 8gb". People who use keywords for comparing are more ready to buy. Comparing keywords are probably the best keywords that you can target for your search engine optimization campaign. They will have much lower search volume than general keywords but they will lead to more sales and it is much easier to get top 10 rankings for these keywords.

    Keywords for buying

During the last research phase, web surfers know what they want to purchase. They are just looking for the website with the best offer. For that reason, these surfers use= very specific keywords: "ipod nano 8gb free shipping. People who use keywords for buying are ready to buy. However, these keywords won't help the website owner’s SEO campaign if they offer competing products, and these kind of keywords tend to get top positions naturally as a result of quality onsite SEO targeted at “comparative keywords”. The majority of web surfers use a two to four word phrase in a search, so phrases are generally more effective. Single words cannot be promoted effectively because they are not very targeted. Internet users who use four-word searches are more likely to purchase goods or services than those using fewer words (source: Oneupweb Research).

  3. Use “how” to help define problems in your topic area. When people search online, many times they’re seeking answers to their problems, and they seek answers to these problems by asking “how” questions. Common questions might be things like how to do one of the following: start, grow, train employees, find employees, market, advertise, price services, bill customers, bid for contracts, buy, insure, find supplies, and write a business plan.

  4. Use "action terms". Note the action terms that were used found in this example — starting, buying, growing, marketing, training, advertising, billing, bidding, etc. These are terms that people use to help them solve the problems. Create a list for each of these terms and brainstorm synonyms for these terms, as well. If you target the wrong keywords, you will lose time and money. You will invest a lot of time in optimizing your web pages for keywords for which your website cannot get high rankings at the moment. Or you will invest a lot of time in optimizing your web pages for keywords that don't convert to sales. It is very important that you choose the right keywords that lead to high search engine rankings and sales. Make sure that you choose the correct keyword type.

  5. Group and research. Focused on similar groups of keywords. This is likely to bring you larger volumes of targeted visitors. For example, wedding photography, photographer for wedding, wedding photographer professional, etc.

  6. Count the searches. One word keywords, while very highly searched, are usually a lost cause and are not very effective because they are not very targeted. In addition, the competition for these keywords is very high and it is very difficult to get good rankings for them. Internet users who use four-word searches are more likely to purchase goods or services than those using fewer words (source: Oneupweb Research).

  7. Use the keywords in your blog posts. With this research you can write articles on these topics, create blog posts about these topics, upload web pages on these topics, update the meta tags on your web pages, make videos on podcasts about these topics, create information products, write pay-per-click campaigns, and design classified ads, to name just a few of the uses for this research.

7 Ways To Increase Web Site Traffic Webinar 1-27-10

Posted by Taylor-Reaume in Run contests , RSS feed , quality content , products , or services , online press releases , Employee evangelism , article publishers

Taylor-Reaume
Blog | Professional SEO Search Marketing Firm

7 Ways To Increase Traffic

1. Provide quality content, products, or services
2. Use an RSS feed
3. Run contests
4. Make it easy for visitors to refer others
5. Write articles for ezines and article publishers
6. Write press releases
7. Employee Evangelism

1. The higher the quality of material you produce, the more often your site will be linked to.

Each link to your site is an avenue for new visitors to your business.
If you do not think you have the ability to create something that will touch
people like it needs to, you may have to spend the money and hire someone else
to do it for you. Fortunately for you, there are a lot of service that will put you in
touch with freelance writers, site designers, and program designers. If you have
an idea about what you want, chances are there is someone available to do it for
you. If you are willing to take a chance on a freelancer who has not yet
established themselves, you can often find one that will work for a low wage in
exchange for the experience the job will give them. Be careful though; often
times you get what you pay for. Make sure the work you get is up to the
standards necessary to appeal to your audience.

2. Use an RSS feed

Another way to build returning traffic to your site is to provide an RSS feed. In
its current form, RSS stand for “Really Simple Syndication”. RSS allows someone
to place a link on their homepage, website, or RSS reader that sends an update
every time you update the information on your site.

This is especially popular with news sites and blogs. If you are posting to your
blog every week day, your readers will get an update 5 times a week. That
means 5 times a week they will be reminded of your name and your website.
This can really work to your advantage because they are getting that reminder
because they asked to be reminded, not because you are forcing yourself on
them. Every day they have a chance to read your message, and have the opportunity
to visit the main part of your site. The more traffic that comes to your site on a
regular basis, the more sales and advertising revenue you can generate.

Another way to use RSS feeds is to bring news or information about your niche
that will add value to your site. By putting fresh, up to date information on your
websites main page, you give visitors a reason to come back to your site on a
continuing basis. If they are interested in your topic, the will return to your site
to get updates.

Both uses of RSS are designed to keep your customers coming back. The more
often they come back and get new, useful, or entertaining material, the more
likely they are of spreading the word to their friends and family, and that is the
first step of going viral.

3. Run Contests

People love to win things, and they love to be recognized for winning. Be
creative in deciding what the prize should be, but consider how much your
customers will think it is worth. While prize doesn’t have to be something of
great value, it does have to be something that is useful or of some value to the
winner. Make sure that it is something they want, not just a blatant
advertisement for your business. A bumper sticker marketing your web address
is not going to generate a great deal of interest. Your advertisement or web
address should be plainly visible, but it should not be the focal point of the item
you are giving away.

If you are running a business to business website, free advertising on your site
for the winner is something that wouldn’t cost you anything, but if your site
doesn’t attract very much traffic the prize may not be seen as being very
valuable.

4. Make it easy for visitors to refer others

Have you noticed the number of websites that include a button that lets you tell
others about the site you are visiting? They are becoming more popular,
because site owners have learned that if you want your visitors to do something
for you, you have to make it as easy as possible. If you want viewers if your site
to tell others, it does not get much simpler than giving them a button to click.
The nice thing is, if you design and set up your own site, it is quick and easy to
add the button. The hardest part is deciding where you want the button located.
If you do not do any site design, it is a small cost to have a designer do it for
you.

The button runs a small bit of code called a “tell-a-friend” script. When your
viewer clicks the button it opens up a small window that allows them to enter
their friends email address and a short message so they can tell others about
your site.

The power of this script goes back to what I discussed back at the beginning of
this book; people will listen to what their friends and family say. There is a level
of trust there that you can not come close to, at least not initially. That kind of
trust is built over time.

Does a tell-a-friend button flood your site with traffic? Maybe not, but it will
bring new traffic, and the traffic that comes is more likely to come back.

Make it easy for readers to email the page to a friend
Allowing your readers to send a link to your site through email is another way to
encourage your visitors to tell their friends and family about your site. It is very
similar to the tell-a-friend button in the way it works.

If someone likes your site, they have an option to click on a button that will open
a window in their email program. The script the button activates will insert your
web address in the message window of the email. They can then fill out the rest
of the message and send your link to as many friends and family members as
they like.

5. Write articles for ezines and article publishers

I mentioned earlier that people are more likely to listen to someone that they
consider to be an expert. Why can’t that expert be you? If you know enough
about a topic to build a business around it, you are an expert. All it takes is a
little marketing to convince others that you are an expert.

One method of establishing yourself as an expert and gaining some exposure for
yourself and your business is to write articles for ezines and article publishers.
You write an article relating to your business, and then post it to one of the
online publishing services. When people read your article, they see your name,
and assume you know what you are talking about. The more different places
you can get your name and the name of your business, the better that chances
are that people will begin to remember you. Over time with multiple exposures
you begin to build brand recognition.

There are two different ways online article publishers let you get your name out.
Some sites, like ezinearticles.com, let you put a short 1-2 sentence “About the
Author” section at the end of your article. You get the opportunity to put
together a brief statement about yourself and your business, and a link back to
your site.

Sites like Associated Content and Helium will have a content producer’s page that
will allow you the room to write quite a bit more. You can talk about yourself,
your business, and why the reader should believe what you say. You can also
include multiple links that will lead the reader into your site.

When readers click on the link to come to your site they are what marketers
refer to as “pre-qualified”. They chose to be there based on the information they
read. They were not tricked into visiting your site, and they were not pressured
to go there by spam emails. They are there by choice, and that makes them
more receptive to your message, and increases the probability that they will
purchase your products or services.

Beside the traffic that comes to your site directly from your article, if the article is
really good it may end up on one of the social bookmark sites like Digg, Stumble
Upon, or del.ico.us. If your article gets ranked in one of these sites, it can bring
a lot of visitors to your site in a very short period of time. That burst of visitors
might last for only a day or two, but it could also linger in the top rankings for
days or weeks.

Another side benefit of writing articles is that they can provide a small amount of
residual income to you. Many of these sites offer revenue sharing that will give
you a small portion of the advertising that the article generates. The amount
you get per article usually is not very much, but enough articles over time can
add up.

6. Write Press Releases

Like many websites, newspapers need content. A lot of newspapers, especially
smaller local newspapers, have a hard time coming up with enough fresh content
to fill all of the space they have. With limited budgets, they do not have the staff
needed to come up with fresh material every day. This creates a great
opportunity for you.

While papers are not just going to give you free advertising, they will allow you
to write an article about something that your businesses is doing, especially if it
involves a service or a community event. The newspapers understand that they
are allowing you to advertise in exchange for the free content, but it can not be
blatant advertising.

All you have to do is write the article, making sure you mention your businesses
name, and list your web address so they can get more information. You just
have to make sure the piece is well written, and that your business is doing
something worth telling people about.

Not only does this get the name of your business out to the community, but it
also helps enhance your reputation. Even without knowing you, people will
make a judgment on whether they like you, and can trust you. By building a
positive reputation as someone who is active in the community, it makes it easier
for them to like you, and by extension, your business.

7. Employee evangelism

The best advocates you have for your business are already on your payroll. Your
employees already have a vested interest in getting the word out about your
company. If you succeed, they get to keep their jobs, but if you fail, they may
find themselves unemployed.

Your employees know your business like no one else does. They can discuss the
ins and outs of your business, and tell others why your product or service is
superior to the competition. Enthusiastic employees will spread the word to
family, friends, and colleagues about your company, and you do not even have
to pay them anything extra to do it. It is part of their normal conversation with
people.

Back in the early days of the computer industry, IBM ruled the world of
technology. A lot of computer companies were trying to get their legs under
them, but IBM was the king. One of the reasons IBM was able to continually
withstand the ever increasing competition was that they understood the power
their employees had to market the company. They had a ready made marketing
team made up of engineers, secretaries, accountants, and programmers. By
harnessing that power they were able to build a stellar reputation in the
computer industry.

From the day they were first hired, IBM employees were taught how to be
advocates for the company. They were trained in the company’s values, and
were shown the quality of the products they were helping to build. They bought
into IBM’s corporate culture, and they, in turn, shared what they knew with
anyone who would listen. The technology world heard the message so often,
and from so many different people, that they never questioned the fact that IBM
was the best.

The key to success is your ability to assemble a loyal dedicated workforce. If
you can do that, then you have the potential to tap into some of that power as
well. Turn your employees into a marketing team and let them spread the word
about how great your company is. If they truly believe it, their enthusiasm will
become infectious. People will believe what your employees say, because it is
obvious that your employees believe it themselves.

Take a good, objective look at your website. Once the traffic comes, what will
they do when they get there? You have to make sure your design is right, your
website is easy to navigate through, all of the links are working, and your
message will convince people to do what you want them to do.
A final reminder; any one of these methods are not meant to be used as the only
marketing you are doing. They should be used as a part of a larger marketing
campaign. Everything you do to spread the word about your site can bring you
traffic. Only a few of them will ever go viral, but each of them has the potential
to send traffic to your site, even without going viral. Do not waste opportunities
waiting for something to happen. Continue working on building traffic to your
site, and being ready when the traffic arrives.

Be prepared. When one of your marketing techniques does go viral, hang on for
a wild ride. It will all be worth your efforts.

To Your Search Engine Success!

Noozhawk Pioneers Exemplary Model For Local News Online

Taylor-Reaume

Noozhawk is pioneering an exemplary model for local news online.

Awhile back I had the pleasure of meeting the founder of Noozhawk, Bill MacFadyen. I can tell when some people have a genuinely good attitude towards life and people, that's the vibe I got from Bill. Check out his web site at www.noozhawk.com I really enjoy reading the local news at his web site. Very interesting and engaging material.

Here's some background on Noozhawk:

Founded in late 2007, the online-only Noozhawk.com is covering the community in two unique ways: With professional journalists providing original reporting on complex issues and topics of the day, and by inviting community members to share their own stories on the everyday activities with which they’re involved.

Thanks to the timely and widely publicized implosion of Santa Barbara's venerable daily newspaper, we're trying to take advantage of the opportunity to disrupt the marketplace against fossil media and a sea of aggregators and bloggers who can't provide enough consistent or reliable context for things like government, school board, politics, crime and natural disasters.

Noozhawk is self-funded and advertising-supported and we're trying not to be too sophisticated for the marketplace, understanding that in a small town all built around relationships, you don't need to be. What I want to do is figure out the exact formula needed for it to work: what the true demographic is, how few reporters you can get away with and what they must cover to convey authenticity, how many sales people you need, and how you handle all the other stuff a daily newspaper should provide -- and then grow this model regionally or take it to other small- to midsized communities with lazy daily newspapers.

For more information please contact Bill:

Join us for an hour filled with interesting conversations about online business. Each week we discuss 7 new ways to increase web site traffic. With over 81% of consumers making purchase decisions online, web sites are no longer optional. If you have a good product or service, then driving traffic to your site is a matter of SEO. Taylor Reaume, The Search Engine Pros Founder, will discuss SEO and Web marketing and spark conversations amongst the attendees.

7 NEW WAYS TO INCREASE WEB SITE TRAFFIC

1) Local SEO and local search engines

The Local search engines often crawl each other to find what are called “citations” that will validate or correct the business information in their own indexes. After all, the search engines are in the business of serving up relevant, up to date information. As an example, you’ll frequently see a business’s Yahoo Local profile show up in the ‘Web Pages’ tab of its Google Local Business Listing. There are other second-tier search engines that show up frequently as well, such as Superpages.com, Yelp.com, and Marchex’s OpenList network.

2) Local blogs

Local blogs are a smart place to get your business listed. These will obviously vary by particular geography, but if you simply perform a search on your favorite search engine for “[your city] blog” or “[your neighborhood] blog,” you’ll find some good locations.  Consider using our Link Robot tool to help you save time finding local blogs. http://www.thesearchenginepros.com/link-robot.html
The web sites that top rank for these kinds of searches are very well-indexed by the search engines, and highly associated with a particular neighborhood, city, or region. Businesses that are mentioned or linked on these blogs are viewed as trusted, relevant results in the Local search engines.

3) Local web directories

Similar to Local blogs, getting your web site listed in Local directories can have a tremendous impact on your local search engine rankings.  Local directories are well-indexed by the search engines and are highly associated with a particular city or region.  Localized directories are typically edited by a human and are much better than those which are “free for all.”   You may have heard the term “FFA Link Directory” – this stands for free for all link farms.  Steer clear of those.  Human-edited directories are less susceptible to spam and are therefore more trusted by the Local search engines. An example of a terrific Locally-focused directory is Best of the Web’s Regional Directory and Yahoo’s Regional Directory. You can perform searches for things like “[your city] directory” or “[your state] directory” to find good prospects for these kinds of citations.

4) Industry-focused directories or blogs

Should you only go after the local directories or blogs?  No.  Go after industry focused directories or even if a website or directory is not focused on a particular region.  If that website is focused on topics and keywords related to what you sell, it may be included among the sites that the Local search engines count as citation sources.  The mantra is of course, Relevance!   Search engines love relevance.   So what is an example of a industry focused blog or directory?  Well, for instance, the membership directory of your trade organization, or a blog that is popular among readers in your industry will probably be crawled by the Local search engines for citations. Searches like “[your industry] directory” or even “[your keyword] directory” will give you some ideas of the kinds of sites on which to get listed.  Many say Content is King.  But that is actually untrue.  It’s Quality, Keyword Rich Content that is KING.  Ask yourself, how much quality, keyword rich content do you have on the net?

5) Citation Sources

Here is a good  list of major sources of citations for the Local search engines:

http://www.thesearchenginepros.com/uploads/2010-01-18_171745.png

6) Local Search Increasing In Popularity

Average weekday circulation at 379 daily U.S. newspapers was down 10.6% in the first half of 2009, compared to the first half of 2008. Ouch. 24 of the top 25 US newspapers suffered circulation losses in the first half of 2009. Double ouch. Some of those declines were more than 20%. Triple ouch. The Nieman Lab post puts this into perspective:

“The 10.6-percent decline means that since last year, about 4.5 percent of U.S. households have given up reading a printed newspaper, and that printed newspapers now reach less than 40 percent of U.S. households.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not rooting for newspapers to fail.  In fact I enjoy reading my local newspaper The Independent and seeing the latest events coming to town.
But let’s face facts: For local bloggers, this is a golden Opportunity. The reality is that the decline of the traditional media is imminent If you’re thinking about starting a hyperlocal blog, there’s no better time than now to do it.

Here’s a few reasons why:

  • Your neighbors are starting to shift their news-reading sources. The web will soon replace traditional media as the primary source of news.
  • Traditional media is struggling, newspapers especially. The numbers above offer plenty of evidence.
  • Not only are papers struggling, but many of them haven’t yet figured out how to gracefully transition to the web. There’s a high likelihood of a deep void in your area where online news is concerned.
  • Starting a loyal customer following, whether online or offline, typically takes time. The difference with the online strategy, such as with a local blog, it that cost wise it is much more affordable, and it is also quite easier than traditional media to maintain the customer base (email).  Granted, your local blog probably won’t be an instant success. Start now, get those beginner’s mistakes out of the way, and get into a routine. Learn what works and what doesn’t in your hometown, and keep repeating the mantra, Content is King.  Remember to include those target keywords in your posts.

This shift from traditional media to online media is still in progress. Over time, more and more of your neighbors will turn to the Internet for local news and information. If you start now, you’ll be better prepared to give them what they want when they find you. Don’t wait. Get started today!

7) A number of other sites can also help you increase the traffic to your website via Local Search:

infoUSA

infoUSA is a major business directory whose data is used as a starting point by many local search engines. If you have a new business, or have moved addresses or changed phone numbers, it is essential to update your information with infoUSA.

Superpages.com

Superpages.com is a top online resource for finding information and insights on businesses and retailers. Google and Yahoo often "double-check" Superpages.com to make sure they're showing correct business information. Here's where to claim your listing.

Yelp.com

Yelp is a very popular Local information portal on the U.S. West Coast, and in certain industries across the rest of the country. If you are in the hospitality industry, especially bars and restaurants, it is essential to claim your profile on Yelp.

Citysearch.com

Citysearch is a major competitor of Yelp that charges you to claim your business listing. It can be expensive but again, if you're in the hospitality industry, it's probably worth the investment to claim your listing on Citysearch.

Brownbook.net

Brownbook.net is a free local business directory that anyone can edit. You can add business listings, update them, and review businesses free and instantly.

Insiderpages.com

Insiderpages.com is a Local search site that is regularly crawled by Google–many times reviews that are left for your business on Insiderpages will show up on Google. Unlike its parent company, Citysearch, Insiderpages lets you claim your listings for free.

Rank Higher in the Local Search Engines With A Universal Business Listing

For only $30/year, Universal Business Listing will ensure that your business is included on all major and secondary search engines.
Create a Universal Business Listing »

Web Marketing Santa Barbara

UniversalBusinessListing.org provides a single entry point where you can create an enhanced business profile that is distributed to all major U.S. search engines, online yellow pages, 411 Directory Assistance, mapping and GPS navigation sites. UBL is the fastest way to get your business included on the primary databases, such as infoUSA, that are the backbone of all Local search engines. You can update your listing for free at any time using UBL's online interface.

Here are some best practices to follow when setting up your local profiles:

Your Business Title

It is commonly agreed by most local seo professionals that your business title is one of the most important factors for ranking well in the Local search engines. Having a title that remains consistent across all the major search engine and directory data sources is important, because it establishes a high level of trust in the existence and location of a particular business.

If your business calls itself “Bob's Pilates Studio” in one directory and “Bob's Pilates Yoga Fitness Studio” in another directory, chances are that Google and other search engines might see that as two separate businesses when it comes to indexing Bob. Bob should pick ONE title for his business and make certain that he stays consistent when adding to other directories. Including high searched keyword phrases in your business title will greatly enhance ranks (Shh! The search engines probably don’t want us to tell you this!). But remember: use common sense people, if you try to cram TOO many keywords into your business title, the search engines might see this as manipulation and send you to the back of the line.

We recommend describing exactly what you do. In the case above, “Bob's Pilates Yoga Fitness Studio” is preferable to plain old “Bob's Pilates Studio” It is a more descriptive business title and this may pull in additional searchers (and clients).
In September 2008, Google unveiled the guidelines for local listings which state that you should list your business using its actual business name, regardless of whether that name contains keywords related to your products or services.

If you are a new business, you might want to take this guideline into account in determining what to call your business, and depending on your area, and what you sell, it may be worth a great deal for established businesses to change their DBA’s to incorporate keywords. Getting your domain name with a keyword inside in the actual domain can be another helpful strategy for top ranks.

Links and Citations

The major search engines, Google, Yahoo, MSN, Best of the Web, and others typically discover your business in two primary ways:

1) Visiting links that point to your website, and tracking on what sites those links appear.

2) Tracking citations of your business, and on what sites these citations appear.

The search engines use these factors when determining where to rank a particular business (i.e. which keyword phrases).  All other things being equal, (key consideration) the business with the most links from high-quality websites in your area (like a chamber of commerce or a city government) and most "citations" from high-quality websites in your area, will usually rank the highest. So you will want to make sure to get your name, contact information, and website on as
many places as you possibly can.  Consider using our Link Robot to help you save time with those efforts.  http://www.thesearchenginepros.com/link-robot.html

Currently, the ‘Web Pages’ tab of your Google Local Business Listing is the most complete list of your citations, though Google probably doesn’t show every single one it knows about.

Citations

Think of citations as “mentions” of your business name and address on other webpages, even if there is no link to your website. An example of a citation might be an article online in a blog where you are mentioned, but not linked.   It can also be a local chamber of commerce, or a local business association where your business information can be found.  The difference between a backlink and a citation is primarlity that a citation may not necessarily be linking at all to your site. "Web references” is a synonym used on other websites for “citations”.

Categories

Many Local search engines, including Google, Yahoo, Best of the Web, and Bing, allow you to place your business into a number of categories (typically between 3 and 6) that help describe what your business primary function is.

The search engines use this data when deciding which businesses to show for particular search queries. The search engines will not display a business which is not categorized, or even worse, mis-categorized, for particular sets of keywords. This usually happens among keywords and phrases that are most competitive—where there are already a number of businesses who are associated with a particular category, and that will satisfy what the searcher is looking for. Pay close
attention to this.  It could be a showstopper if you don't get it right.

Reviews and Ratings
After all of the work we have done with local search engine optimization, it’s still unclear to us how many reviews and ratings of a business actually impact its ranking position.  But one thing is certain, reviews and ratings are very persuasive to prospective customers.  A negative review can encourage someone to hit their “Back” button and perform another search, and a good review can encourage someone to pick up the phone and call you!

Engage your customers after each sale, and ask them to make a positive comment on your local profile.  Also, it’s important to do damage control when someone posts a negative review of your business.  Use twitter and web alert monitors to stay on top of bad reviews.  Reach out to that customer and find out why they had a bad experience with your company, and see if there is anything you can do to change their opinion of you.  Often times it is not worth it to suffer a bad review online compared to the cost to make the customer happy.

Photos / Videos

Photos and videos don’t seem to matter much for rankings, but they are helpful for conversion reasons. A Google Local Business Listing with no photos probably has just as much potential to rank well as a listing with 6 photos and 3 videos.

That said, we've found that attractive photos and videos increase the number of clicks that a particular listing gets. They generally offer a great way to show off your business.  Consider showcasing projects that your company has worked on, some of the people in your office, perhaps the office itself, etc. A human feel can increase trust levels and help you stand out in an otherwise flat playing field.

The Santa Barbara Wellness Directory

The Santa Barbara Wellness Directory has become the definitive source for holistic health services and products in the Santa Barbara-Ventura area of California.

Now in its 8th year of operation "The Directory" proudly represents and promotes over 200 local wellness practitioners from dozens of practices, disciplines and industries - from Massage to Acupuncture, Yoga to Solar panels and beyond.

When we started in 2003, many people said "You can't market "Wellness"" - but we didn't and don't agree. If our healers, musicians and artists can't pay their rent we're all in trouble. Throughout history, these folks would have been seated next to the Queen & King, and their gifts were revered and protected - for very good reason.

Q: Why are there so many Blind Bards in literature?
A: Because if the Bard was talented, they were made made blind so they could not leave town.

We have witnessed many websites attempt to do something similar over these years, but sadly few have survived. The Wellness Directory is a tangible manifestation of the right-left hemispheres of the brain - "marketing wellness" - an entity whose time has come, and is always an exercise of balance, and patience.

With this knowledge and conviction, we are determined to assist to flip conventional "wisdom" on its head, and render Wellness an economically viable, and even thriving industry.

And so, it is very rewarding to watch this beautiful little "child" grow into adolescence, especially at this time in our common path, when healing is so necessary.

We have lots of exciting developments unfolding presently so please be sure to visit www.SantaBarbaraWellnessDirectory.com to share and take part in our progress.

Prepare to be inspired!

You might be looking to promote a viewpoint or an issue, or you might be interested in making the jump to online business. Take some time and make sure that you know these five important natural search engine optimization tips that will help you improve your rankings!

Content, Content, Content
No matter what you are trying to do and no matter what you are trying to promote, your site needs content in order to aim towards good optimization. This means everything from instructional writing to search engine optimized article writing to blogs. The more content you can put out there, the more hits you are going to get and the better your rankings are going to be. Remember how important it is to pull in the search engine bots!

Share the Wealth
This doesn't mean that you need to pay people to talk up your site, what this means is that you are going to need to spread out a lot of information and valuable resources. Take a moment and make sure that you have authored articles for public consumption. If you post them up in other places with a small link to your own site at the bottom. This will not only build up your back linking, you will also find that it makes more people aware of your work in general, which is always a good thing when it comes to optimization.

Tag Your Pictures
We all know that when it comes to marketing and good optimization that we need pictures, but don't remember that these pictures need to be tagged as well. You'd be surprised how many people search for things by image and when you have your pictures well tagged, you will find that you are going to get more hits that are relevant to your interests and to what you are trying to do. Your pictures are a resource that you cannot afford to ignore.

Regular Updates
If you want to make the most out of your website optimization, remember to update your content regularly. Not only will this keep your “regulars” coming back, you will also find that it encourages search engines to constantly index you, making for a much better rating overall. This is one reason why people making blogging such an important part of their site and why it has become so popular with both businesses and private parties.

No Black Hat Techniques
